The Why
When the salon went quiet, the hair got loud.
4×4 Faces started as a lockdown diary—a way to process roots growing out, bangs misbehaving, and the weird tenderness of cutting your own hair in the kitchen light.
Before the world paused, hair just “happened” between errands. Then one day, the salon chair disappeared. Roots crept in. Headscarves and box dyes came out. We became our own stylists, therapists, and hype squads.
In that strange quiet, Frances picked up her pen and began drawing women from memory and imagination: 4×4-inch portraits where hair was the headline, not an afterthought. Pin curls, power bobs, afros, protective styles, grown-out color lines—each one a mood, a moment, a tiny act of agency.
Today, those tiles have grown into a living art brand: books, wall art, bags, pillows, salon packs, and more. Still 4×4. Still hair-first. Still whispering (and sometimes shouting) the same truth: when the hair feels right, the spirit follows.
